A Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT1) is a trained professional authorized to collect blood samples through skin puncture and venipuncture. They ensure accurate collection and labeling of blood samples, follow proper equipment usage, and maintain patient information in a database. Certified Phlebotomists also provide comfort to nervous patients during the blood drawing process.

PHLEBOTOMY TRAINING PROGRAM INFO

In just 88 hours, you can become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician with our CPT1 training program. This program offers education and training for individuals aspiring to pursue a career as a licensed California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I). It is a customized accelerated program designed to be completed as quickly as possible without becoming overwhelming.

Most new students qualify for the full course, which consists of both BASIC and ADVANCED sessions, along with a 40-hour Externship. This constitutes the complete 88-hour program.

If you have prior experience as a Phlebotomist in California, you may be eligible for the 20-hour ADVANCED course only.

For more details on this, please read on, or you can call us at 213-398-8838 for further clarification.

RCI offers an extensive externship program for all phlebotomy students, which is included in the course. Unlike many other phlebotomy training programs that require students to find their own externship site, RCI provides the opportunity for students to complete their Phlebotomy Certification program as an extern in a professional healthcare facility (e.g. hospital, medical clinic, etc.), offering hands-on practical training alongside classroom instruction. During this program, students must fulfill 40 hours of clinical time, during which they will work under the guidance of a phlebotomist preceptor. This involves drawing blood from actual patients at one of the various RCI community affiliate locations. Our externship instruction enables you to apply the phlebotomy skills you’ve learned in the classroom to a real-world medical healthcare setting. You will gain experience working with actual patients while being supervised by experienced medical healthcare professionals. Completing your externship is a requirement for obtaining your California CPT1 license, unless you are an Advanced student.

After graduation, each student can complete a California State Phlebotomy Certification application (along with all required documents) and submit it to the California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services (LFS). If you require assistance, you can either call or schedule an appointment with RCI’s staff, who will guide you through the certification process. Our Certification and Resources & FAQs pages will also provide additional useful information for this process.

Currently, California offers three types of Phlebotomy Certifications. Most students begin with the application for Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 (CPT1). For more details, please refer to our Phlebotomy Certification Matrix.
